To better understand the different facets and options that homeowners insurance provides, we have provided the following information. Please contact Harvest Insurance Agency if you have any questions or would like more information about California homeowners insurance.
Is Homeowners Insurance Required?
Homeowners insurance is not required by law, but it is required by most banks issuing mortgages on your home. If you own a home, homeowners insurance is essential. Homeowners insurance is designed to pay for damages to your home and its contents, or it can protect you from financial liability if you are held responsible because someone other than a member of your household is injured on your property.
Homeowners insurance includes legal defense cost if you are taken to court. For example, of a branch from a tree on your property were to fall on the home next to yours, your homeowners insurance would cover your liability for your neighbor’s injury and property damage.
Against which perils is my property protected?
With about 900 insurance companies writing property/casualty policies in the United States, individual homeowners policies vary. However, 80 percent of homeowners policies are based on a standard form, and all homeowners policies cover two important areas: property and liability.
At a minimum, homeowners insurance usually covers damage caused by:
- Fire or lightning
- Windstorm or hail
- Explosions
- Riot or civil commotion
- Aircraft
- Vehicles
- Smoke
- Theft or vandalism (sometimes called malicious mischief)
- Falling objects
- Weight of ice, snow or sleet
- Freezing of a plumbing, heating, air conditioning or other such household system
I’m a renter. Do I need homeowners insurance coverage?
Yes! The same rule of thumb that applies to homeowners applies to renters. If catastrophe struck tomorrow could you afford to replace everything you own? Or if you were sued, would you have enough money to pay legal fees and possibly settle the suit? If not, chances are you would benefit from the protection that renters insurance brings. Harvest Insurance Agency can provide you with a free quote and more information for the right renter protection at the right price.
I own a Condo. How is my homeowners policy different?
Condo owners insurance covers the same general areas provided for homeowners in the important areas of personal property and liability. In addition, condo owners insurance provides coverage for some situations specific to condominium unit owners.
Usually, the condominium association buys insurance to cover the property (building and structures) and liability coverage for the general association. If you own a condominium unit, you may be responsible for covering your unit from the “walls in.”
That means you must cover your personal property and the interior of your unit — essentially whatever is excluded from the condo associations policy. Harvest Insurance Agency can provide you with more information or a free quote for Condo insurance.
What about Flood Insurance?
Every year homeowners lose billions of dollars to flood damage in the United States. Protection from flood waters is not included in homeowners, renters or rental property insurance policies, but separate flood insurance is available in many communities through Harvest Insurance Agency from the National
Flood Insurance Program. This policy covers you against damage resulting from both rising water and flash flooding. To request a quote, contact an Harvest Insurance Agency insurance sales representative.
